Basil Leaves
Basil Leaves are a common spice consisting of the dried leaves of Ocimum basilicum, an annual herb of the family Lamiaceae (Labiatae) native to India and Iran. Additionally, as a member of the mint family and known as the herb of kings, its name is a derivative of the Greek word basileus, meaning king. Basil goes well with other herbs, spices, and flavorings, especially thyme, garlic, oregano, and lemon.
Commonly used in a variety of dishes, like Italian, Thai, and seafood, it has a fresh, earthy sweetness. It pairs well with tomatoes and garlic. Furthermore it punches up dressings and sauces. Mix it with oregano, thyme and rosemary to create traditional Italian seasoning. Furthermore, is great when paired with capers, corn, eggplant, eggs, mozzarella cheese, olives, pasta, peas, pizza, potatoes, rice, tomatoes, white beans and zucchini.
Moreover, Basil just happens to be one of those herbs that is better when dried. The plant possess a more saturated flavor when dried because drying forces the plant tissue to collapse. This increases the amount of the essential oil present in the herb, giving it a better taste. Marjoram ,thyme, rosemary are also considered better dried.
