Ground Cardamom
Ground Cardamom also spelled Cardamon is the fruit or seed of the ginger family. The seeds have a warm, slightly pungent, and highly aromatic flavor somewhat reminiscent of camphor. Originally cultivated in India, cardamom was imported into Europe around A.D. 1214. Cardamom is grown in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Mexico, Thailand and Central America.
The spice known as cardamom is the fruit of several plants. The genera Elettaria belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, whose principal member is Elletaria Cardamomum. The plant it self is a perennial herb with a thick, fleshy root stock. Which sends up flowering stems from 6 to 12 feet high.
Cardamom whole is green pods, the seed inside are decorticate form. The cardamom seed in ground form is most sold. Cardamom is frequent components in spice mixes in a variety of cuisines.
Cardamom ground smells like a fragrance with a strong unique taste. It is a common ingredient in Indian cooking and is breads, coffee and teas. In Asia cardamon is cook in both sweet and savory food dishes. Cardamom powder is a spice for sweet dishes, as flavoring in coffee and tea.
